Calheta, Azores Portugal

Calheta is a Portuguese village on the Island of São Jorge, Azores, Portugal, with about 1200 inhabitants (2001 census). He was elevated to the status of villa on June 3, 1543, by royal charter of Juan III of Portugal (Arquivo dos Açores, Vol. V, page 141). On May 12, 1718 the construction of the convent of the Villa de Calheta was authorized. In 1732 the construction of its parent church began.
