Armamar Portugal

Armamar is a Portuguese town that is in the District of Viseu, Northern Region and intermunicipal community of the Douro, with about 1,200 inhabitants. It is the seat of a municipality with 112.24 km² of area and 7.492 inhabitants (2001), subdivided into 19 parishes. The municipality limits to the north with Peso da Régua, to the northeast with Sabrosa, to the east with Tabuaço, to the southeast with Moimenta da Beira, to the southwest with Tarouca and to the west with Lamego. In 1639, it was reinforced with the institution of the County of Armamar in favor of Rui de Matos de Noronha, a privilege granted by King Filipe IV of Spain as payment for the services rendered to the Crown by his uncle the Archbishop of Braga D. Sebastião de Matos de Noronha.
